Pixel
This is short for picture element, the smallest piece of a digital image. A pixel is also referred to as a single point in a graphic image. These elements are the building blocks of your picture, similar to floor tiles or the squares in a mosaic. Put millions of these tiny squares together and you have a digital picture. In fact, “megapixel” is a simple way of saying one million pixels.

Resolution
This refers to the number of pixels in an image. The more the pixels in a digital photograph, the more detail the digital photograph can contain and better the image quality. It also refers to the sharpness and clarity of a digital photograph. It is measured in Mega pixels. One Mega pixel is equal to one million pixels. A low resolution refers to less than 1 mega-pixel, high-resolution refers to greater than 1 mega-pixel and advanced high resolution is 4 mega-pixels or more. In Digital Photography the resolution of the camera is the most necessary feature to produce first class photographs.

Auto Focus
A good choice for general picture taking is auto mode. This setting, allows your digital camera to automatically set the exposure, the focus, and the flash. With auto mode, you may override the automatic options of the flash and choose to turn the flash off, use fill flash, or red eye reduction.

Digital Zoom
This crops your image and magnifies the result of the cropping. This magnification process is called interpolation. Sacrificing image quality to capture the moment is more important than not getting the picture at all.

Optical Zoom
This physically tends to magnify the subject. A motor controls the lens movement. When you press the switch to W or T, the subject is either magnified or reduced in size. They are wide-angle (reduce) and telephoto (magnify) respectively. This allows you to view the subject before taking the picture.

Memory
It denotes the number of images stored in the camera.

I use film, but if someone asks me whether they should buy a film camera or a digital camera, I almost always recommend digital. The answer is not so simple if someone asks me which is ‘better’ – film or digital?

The answer comes down what you mean by ‘better.’ Photography is many things to many people, so the merits of the medium depends on what you expect to get out of it.

In my business (a nature photography gallery), the single most important criteria is the quality of the printed photograph. For me, film still provides superior quality enlargements, even though darkroom printing has all but died out. These days, I get a high-resolution scan from the original film, and print my photos digitally. This process gives me a better quality enlargement than a print from a digital camera. I am talking about BIG enlargements here – A2 and sometimes larger.

So why do I recommend others to switch to digital photography (if they haven’t already)? Simply because not many people make their living selling framed photographs. Let’s face it, how many of us will ever print a photo larger than 8×12 inch (20x30cm)?

These days, in fact, how many of us ever get around to printing our photos at all? The day of the photo album has passed. Today most photos will only ever exist as digital files. We can share them in emails, insert them into websites, use them as screensavers…for many people the idea of actually printing a photo is little more than a novelty.

So in the age of digital photography, what does film has to offer? Well, not much, except for the high cost of developing and printing (don’t forget you have to pay for each exposure, even the bad ones). Then there is the long delay between taking the photo and seeing the result. Finally, if you want to use your photo for any practical purpose, you will probably have to scan it to turn it into a digital file anyway.

So, is digital photography ‘better’ than film photography? In the modern world, which demands speed and convenience, yes. With your digital camera you can take all the photos you like at no real cost, and see the results instantly. You don’t have to pay to print photos you don’t want, and you can simply delete your unsuccessful images from your camera.

That’s not to say digital photography is perfect; far from it. I have already mentioned that your digital files are not as good as film for very big enlargements, but there is more to it than that. The quality of a digital print is a little ‘flatter’ than a photo printed from film. It may have plenty of colour and detail, but in ways that are hard to explain, it lacks the illusion of three-dimensional real life that you can get from film.

In the past, most digital photographers would laugh at me for suggesting such a thing. I suspect that was because after investing a small fortune in their new technological treasure, they were reluctant to admit that their new toy was not perfect in every way. Today, however, even the most committed digital convert seems willing to admit that the digital revolution has, for all its advantages, brought with it a level of compromise in quality.

Is there a solution? Of course there is, and it is called software. Whichever editing program you use, it is quite easy to ‘tweak’ your photos to a standard that is as rich and three dimensional as a photo printed from film. These programs have become a fact of life for many photographers, but not everyone likes to use them or even knows how to. Then there are the grumpy old purists (like me) who feel that a well-exposed photo should not require enhancement to bring it up to standard.

So where does all this leave us? Is digital better than film? For my purposes, no. For your purposes, most likely yes. If your priority is not large, high quality prints, there is really very little reason to stick with film (other than nostalgia).

If you are shopping for a camera (SLR or compact), make it a digital. Just as important, take the time to learn how to use it. Photography is still about focus, aperture, shutter speed, composition and lighting. The digital vs. film debate means nothing if your camera is always switched to auto for taking snapshots. Oh, and get to know your computer…you’re going to need it.

ISO sensitivity indicates light sensitivity. Most cameras have ISO sensitivity of 100 as the normal setting. Sensitivity settings can range from 50, 200, 400, 800, or even as high as 3,200 on the more expensive high-end digital SLRs. For beginners who just want to use the camera for personal use, you will want to concentrate on the megapixel, a nice size LCD screen, and a large storage memory.

There are alternatives, there are ALWAYS alternatives to every problem. Honest! Yes, it may cost 0 to fix your camera, and yes you can buy that camera in the bubble pack on the shelf at Wall Mart for less than 0, but what kind of quality do you honestly expect from a 0 camera? You shouldn’t expect high quality that’s for sure, because you won’t be getting it.

#1 – Broken/cracked LCD screen.

It was hard for me to choose between a jammed lens and a broken LCD screen but I stuck with LCD for #1 because it’s so easy to break your LCD that you don’t even have to touch the camera to do it!

The LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is the view screen on the back of the camera that lets you see menus, playback pictures etc. The LCD is very thin, very fragile, and on many many cameras completely UNPROTECTED! Look at the back of your camera, is the screen recessed slightly or is the back of the camera flat and smooth? If it’s flat you have a protective ‘window’ or ‘glass’ over the LCD to help prevent damage and breakage. If it’s not flat, you have nothing protecting your LCD and should put a good quality LCD screen protector on the camera and NOT those thin, flimsy ‘saran wrap’ plastic film screen protectors, they are worthless.

- Don’t expose your camera to high heat or extreme cold in your car. Extreme heat can cause expansion of the liquid in the LCD and cause it to ‘crack’, and on the other side of things extreme cold can cause it to freeze!

- Don’t put anything up against the LCD in your camera bag, it will bang against the LCD and crack it (yes, even if it has a window over it, it will break!)

- Don’t put your camera in your back pocket and then sit down!

- Don’t put your camera in your front pocket and then roll over on it.

- … Just don’t put your camera in your pants pocket please. =)

Ok, so it’s broken, what do you do now?

- Manufacturers usually cite impact damage as the cause of the breakage and will not repair the camera under warranty. You can try, and I wish you luck, but they probably won’t fix it.

- Search for defective cameras on eBay and use one to repair yours and make one good camera out of them.

- Look for an actual camera repair business and not somebody that will send it to the manufacturer and tell you it’s $200 and 4-6 weeks to repair. (If they tell you this, they are NOT repairing your camera for you, they are sending it to the manufacturer, guaranteed)

Many LCD screens are very easy to install and you can do it yourself and all you need is a small screwdriver. Other LCD’s are very difficult to install, and even professionals don’t like to do them! While I can’t pick one brand …. is the best and Brand … is the worst, it’s really not like that. Certain SERIES of cameras have 1 or 2 models that are difficult to work on, yet the rest of them are fairly straight forward. You need to decide for yourself if you want to open your camera and try the repair yourself or not.

How is an LCD replaced?

With most Canon digital camera LCD screens for example (using them as the example because they have the largest market share) all you do is disconnect the ribbon cable for the LCD and the backlight (the light that shines through the LCD and allows you to see what is on the screen) and then install the new LCD. Some come with the backlight attached, some do not. Some backlights need to be soldered to the mainboard of the camera, some do not.

- Be careful to not touch the flash capacitor contacts! You will shock yourself pretty good if you do it and it will hurt a bit. You may end up tossing the camera half-way across the room when it happens to you. (Yeah, I’ve done it, I’ve been repairing cameras for 5 years now so….) We have ‘flash capacitor dischargers’ and use them every time we open a camera.

I hope this sheds some light on the subject of digital camera repair. You do not have to throw your camera away because the LCD is broken, and you can even fix it yourself!
