Determining your price point is paramount. If money is tight but you really want to preserve all of those old 35mm slides and negatives that you and your family have been accumulating for years, then you may need to go with a low cost model. Many people are quite pleased with these film scanners. The most important thing to keep in mind is these machines will not produce as high a quality of image as a high performance scanner will. Don’t try to compare dis-similar options when looking at scanners. Look at things like if the scanner can do printed images or if it only reads negatives.

If image quality is important, look for a 35mm film scanner with a high resolution and bit depth. A scanner with a high resolution equates to sharper photos. Bit depth determines how true your colors are. If you think you will need to edit your pictures, make sure the scanner software can handle that. However, don’t fret if you find a great scanner that doesn’t have great software as there are many other software packages you can buy later. If the scanner comes with good editing software with a user friendly interface, this will save you a lot of time and headaches and you are more likely to end up with digital images that you are happy with.

Additionally, check if your negatives have any level of damage. Something as simple as dust can cause big issues. Even the best scanners will not be able to repair damage to photos or negatives.
