What Are Some Good, Affordable Cameras For A Semi-pro Photographer?
Posted on | February 2, 2010 | 4 Comments
I photographed a friend’s wedding (I love photography and I’ve been know to have a good eye, so she asked me) and the response has been awesome. I’ve gotten calls for another five jobs, so it’s been good.
I’ve been using a friend’s camera (he’s a pro, actually), but it’s WAY too expensive for me – for now.
What are some good, affordable cameras that I could use?

Affordable really does not give a price range. So realize what is affordable to one person may not be for another. I would recommend the D300. Its a great semi-pro camera that will give reliable operation in most all conditions It uses all of the Nikon lenses series AI onward to the newest made today. It has great performance at high ISO, superb color and lots of capability. Its not cheap though. If you cannot afford that I would say to look at the entry to mid level Nikon DSLR . They will also give you good reliable performance and whatever accessories you get with them will work with future Nikons you buy
If you have a bit more than what the D300 cost go for a D3 or a D700

Since you are working as a professional, have you considered “renting” professional camera equipment in order to fulfill a photo assignment. “Renting” may be a far more economic way of obtaining the use of specific pro cameras. As you probably already know, most professional do not “own” their camera equipment due to changing technology which creates a never ending line of updated models which supercede earlier models. Check out samys.com website for rental information or visit their camera store on Fairfax Boulevard about 2 block south of 3rd Street.
Good luck!

At present there are two levels of cameras that would suit a semi-pro.
The best and most expensive: Nikon D700 and Canon 5D, Mark II
Still excellent, yet affordable, but with a smaller sensor: Canon 50D and Nikon D90.
