Can I Increase My Photo Resolution After The Fact? (or, Help With Mpix?)?

Posted on | January 23, 2010 | 3 Comments

I am doing photos for a friend’s wedding, and recently I did her engagement photos, once of which she wanted on an invitation that I designed.
I’m trying to use Mpix.com to print these invitations, but it told me that it couldn’t upload because the resolution doesn’t meet the 400 by 800 standard. (I’m using the Specialty Products – Greeting Card – Blank 4×8)
So, I went into PhotoShop and it told me the original photo that I used in the invite was at 72 resolutions, so I’m thinking I screwed everything up somehow, and am super stressed out. I used MPix last year to do my sister’s graduation invites and had no problems like this, so I don’t know what I did differently, or if they changed their uploading requirements or something. I don’t want to order a hundred invites only to have the photo be totally grainy, but I really can’t put this off because they waited until the absolute last minute to tell me what to order, lol.
Is there any way to fix this?? I have such a headache. :-(

If you have the original picture you can still fix it. 72 DPI is web resolution as monitors can’t display higher than that… plus is convenient when you are E-mailing or uploading to your web site. Print Resolution is 200, 250 or 300 DPI. I use 200 DPI for print.
Open the original file in Photoshop, go to IMAGE and scroll down to SIZE. Set the resolution to 200.
    Good luck

If the original photo is 72 pixels you have a problem. The settings on your camera were probably different. You cannot get more pixels now.

Is your problem SIZE or RESOLUTION? They are not the same thing. I have used Mpix for years and am very familiar with the site.
Does your photo have to be exactly 400 x 800 to fit the template? If so, you just need to go into Photoshop, to Image – Image size and see what your resolution and size specs are on the photo. Mpix printers use a resolution of 250. Set your resolution to 250 and be sure resample image is checked and constrain proportions is checked. Then enter the pixel dimensions of your photo to whichever is the larger of the two specs. In other words, you don’t want to re-size the photo to 400 x 600. You would instead size it to, for example, 600 x 800. You will then have to go to Image – Canvas Size and crop off the extra 200 from the 600 dimension to arrive at a perfect 400 x 800 at 250 DPI.
If you are using any camera made in the last 5 years you should have plenty of resolution for a photo this size even if you have your camera set to it’s lowest setting, (which I hope you did not).
If you can’t get the sizing like you need, you can email me the photo and I will size it for you.
